Attractions in and around Northamptonshire

Kirby Hall

Kirby Hall is one of England’s greatest Elizabethan and 17th century houses earlier owned by Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I. Although this vast mansion is partly roofless, the walls show the exceptionally rich decoration that proclaims that its successive owners were always in the forefront of new ideas about architecture and design. Take time to wander around the recently restored great gardens with their elaborate ‘cutwork’ design complete with statues and urns.

Rockingham Castle

This remarkable castle, built on the instruction of William the Conqueror, has been a family’s home for 450 years. Prior to the Watson’s ownership the Castle was held by the crown. There are very few other homes that have been continuously occupied for nearly 1000 years and within that time been owned by just one family since being relinquished as a royal Castle. This is a particularly extraordinary aspect of Rockingham’s long and fascinating story.

Nene Valley Railway

Nene Valley Railway is a heritage railway that offers a family day out but is no mere manufactured visitor attraction as the preserved railway uses part of the original London and North Western line from Northamptonshire into the Cathedral city of Peterborough, encompassing the stations of Yarwell, Wansford, Ferry Meadows (Nene Park) and Orton Mere.

Wicksteed Park

Whether you want to feel the wind in your hair, munch a picnic or take a stroll in the woods, there’s something for everyone at Wicksteed. There are over 30 rides and attractions to keep everyone entertained, from hold-on-to-your-hat thrill rides to gentle carousels. The Lake is the heart of the park, with shingle beaches, pontoons, nature spots and the arboretum for you to enjoy. And there’s a pretty special natural play zone in the works to boot. The second lake, at the south end of the park, is super-secluded, which makes it a great wildlife haven. Visitors can spot terns, kingfishers, grebes, ibis, swans, diving ducks, and hundreds of droning dragonflies in the summer.
